Material 253MA stainless steel pipe

Material 253Ma vs 316 Stainless Steel

253MA is specifically tailored for high-temperature applications with superior resistance to oxidation and thermal stability, whereas 316 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance across a broad range of environments but may not perform as well under extreme high-temperature conditions.

1. Chemical Composition:

253MA: It is a high-temperature austenitic stainless steel containing high levels of chromium, nickel, and nitrogen, along with additions of manganese and silicon.
316 Stainless Steel: It is a standard austenitic stainless steel containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, with lower levels of carbon compared to Stainless Steel 253MA.

Chemical Element (%) 253MA (UNS S30815) 316L (UNS S31603)
Chromium (Cr) 20.0 – 22.0% (Higher for oxidation resistance) 16.0 – 18.0%
Nickel (Ni) 10.0 – 12.0% (Optimized cost-to-performance) 10.0 – 14.0%
Molybdenum (Mo) - (Not optimized for acids) 2.0 – 3.0% (Crucial for pitting resistance)
Silicon (Si) 1.40 – 2.00% (High for scale adhesion) ≤ 0.75%
Nitrogen (N) 0.14 – 0.20% (Boosts creep strength) ≤ 0.10%
Cerium (Ce) / REM 0.03 – 0.08% (Prevents oxide spallation) -
Carbon (C) 0.05 – 0.10% ≤ 0.03%

2. Temperature Resistance:

UNS S30815: 253MA Stainless Steel Pipe is specifically designed for high-temperature applications, offering excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F).
S31600 Stainless Steel: While 316 stainless steel pipe is capable of withstanding moderately high temperatures, it is not specifically engineered for extreme high-temperature environments like 253MA.

3. Corrosion Resistance:

1.4835 Alloy 253 MA: It offers good resistance to oxidation, sulfidation, and carburization in various environments, including those containing high levels of sulfur and nitrogen. 253MA however has a higher carbon content so it is highly susceptible to sensitization.
1.4436 (AISI 316): It provides excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of atmospheric, chemical, and marine environments, but may not be as suitable for high-temperature, highly corrosive conditions as 253MA.

4. Mechanical Properties:

Material 253MA: It typically exhibits higher strength and creep resistance compared to 316 stainless steel, especially at elevated temperatures.
316 Stainless Steel: While it has good tensile and yield strength, 316 stainless steel may not perform as well as 253MA under high-temperature conditions.

5. Applications:

253MA Stainless: Common applications include furnace components, heat exchangers, kilns, gas turbines, and other high-temperature industrial equipment.
316 Stainless Steel: Widely used in various industries for equipment and components requiring corrosion resistance, such as chemical processing, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and marine applications.
