What is Hastelloy B3 (UNS N10675)?
Hastelloy B3 is the improved successor to Hastelloy B2. It features significantly better thermal stability and improved fabrication characteristics. Its chemistry is designed to handle extreme reducing environments.
- Main Standards: ASTM B622, ASTM B333, EN 2.4600.
- Key Strength: Unmatched performance in pure Hydrochloric acid.
What is Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276)?
Widely considered the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloy available, C276 contains high levels of Chromium to handle oxidizing environments and Molybdenum for reducing conditions.
- Main Standards: ASTM B619, ASTM B575, EN 2.4819.
- Key Strength: Resistance to wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide.

Key Differences in Application
Corrosion Resistance: Reducing vs. Oxidizing
- B3 for Reducing Media: If your project involves high-temperature, or Phosphoric acid without oxidizing impurities, B3 is the superior choice. It avoids the brittle phases often found in earlier B-series alloys.
- C276 for Mixed Media: If the environment fluctuates between reducing and oxidizing, or contains "dirty" acids with ferric or cupric salts, C276 is required. Its Chromium content provides a protective passive film that B3 lacks.
Thermal Stability
Hastelloy B3 has a distinct advantage in fabrication. It resists the formation of grain-boundary carbide precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone, making it safer for structural integrity in chemical processing vessels than older nickel alloys.
Applications
Hastelloy B3 / UNS N10675 / DIN 2.4600 is commonly used in chemical processing industries, especially in applications involving strong reducing acids, such as hydrochloric acid, as well as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid environments.
Alloy C-276, 2.4819, UNS N10276 is widely used in various industries, including chemical processing, pulp and paper production, pollution control, waste treatment, and marine applications, where corrosion resistance to a broad range of environments is required.

At Huitong Pipeline, we support global engineering projects by adhering to regional and international specifications:
Americas: Full compliance with ASME Section VIII Division 1 and ASTM B622/B575.
Europe: Material numbers 2.4600 (B3) and 2.4819 (C276) certified to PED 2014/68/EU.
Middle East & Asia: Meeting NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 standards for sour gas service in oil and gas sectors.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Is Hastelloy B3 more expensive than C276?
Generally, yes. Due to the higher Molybdenum content and specialized manufacturing process to ensure thermal stability, Hastelloy B3 typically carries a higher market price per kilogram than C276.
Q2: Can I weld C276 and B3 together?
It is possible but requires specialized welding consumables (typically Alloy C22 or similar) and strict adherence to heat-input protocols. Consult our technical team for specific welding procedures.
Q3: Which alloy is better for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD)?
Hastelloy C276 is the industry standard for FGD systems due to its ability to handle sulfur compounds and chloride-induced pitting simultaneously.
