What challenges in flue gas desulfurization industry meets?

The flue gas emitted by places such as coal-fired power plants, steel sintering plants, and chemical plants often contains high concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2). It must be desulfurized to meet the standards before being discharged. At present, the wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) process is widely used, but in actual operation, this process is prone to multiple corrosion risks due to complex chemical reactions, which constitutes a very challenging working environment. For example:

 

  • Chemical corrosion: SO₂ dissolves in water to form sulfurous acid (H₂SO₃), which is partially oxidized to highly corrosive sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
  • Halogen corrosion: The concentration of chloride ions (Cl⁻) carried by coal-fired flue gas can reach tens of thousands of ppm, inducing pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
  • Abrasion corrosion: The limestone slurry contains a large amount of solid particles (content 15-20%), which cause erosion on the metal surface under high-speed spraying.
  • Temperature fluctuations: The flue gas inlet temperature can reach 160-180°C, and drops sharply to 50-60°C in the absorption tower, resulting in Thermal stress and condensate acidification.

In an acidic slurry environment as low as 1.5-4, 904L can form an extremely stable and self-healing passivation film. Its 904L corrosion rate is usually less than 0.1 mm/year, which means that the life of 904L equipment can be extended several times or even more than ten times. Secondly, 904L can also resist chloride ions. It has almost no pitting or only very shallow pitting in a high-chlorine environment, effectively avoiding leakage accidents caused by pitting perforation.

Under the combined effects of high Cl⁻, medium and high temperatures (commonly 50-80°C) and acidic environments, austenitic stainless steel is prone to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in the heat-affected zone of welds. The nickel content of 904L as high as 23-28% greatly reduces the risk of catastrophic brittle fracture, ensuring the structural integrity and safe operation of the equipment.
