What's the Difference: Hastelloy B3 vs C22 ?

Hastelloy B3 vs C22:

Corrosion Resistance:

Alloy B3: Hastelloy B3 is a nickel-molybdenum alloy with the addition of chromium. It resists stress corrosion cracking and pitting in sulfuric acid environments. Superior resistance to hydrochloric acid and other reducing acids.
Alloy C22: On the other hand, Hastelloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with the addition of tungsten. More versatile, with excellent resistance to both reducing and oxidizing environments. Including sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, chlorides, and other halides.

 

Mechanical properties: 

The tensile strength and elongation at break of Hastelloy B3 are slightly better than those of Hastelloy C22. However, the hardness and yield strength of Hastelloy C22 are higher compared to Hastelloy B3.

  • UNS N06022 Yield Strength: Approximately 320 MPa (46 ksi)
  • UNS N06022 Hardness: Approximately 90 HRB (Rockwell B)

 

weldability: 

Another significant difference between Hastelloy B3 and Hastelloy C22 is weldability. 2.4602 Hastelloy C22 has better welding properties than 2.4600 Hastelloy B3 due to its low carbon content.

 

Thermal Stability:

  • B3: Improved thermal stability for reducing environments.
  • C22: Stable across a wide range of temperatures and environments.

 

Hastelloy B3 vs C22: Applications

  • B3: Best suited for highly reducing environments, especially with hydrochloric acid.
  • C22: More suitable for environments with varying conditions, including the presence of chlorides.
