ASTM B165 Monel 400 Pipe does not look like a complicated product on a datasheet, and that is part of the problem. Buyers who read the composition quickly see about 63% nickel and 30% copper and assume it is just another high-nickel alloy somewhere between stainless steel and Hastelloy. It is not.
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (UNS N04400, W.Nr. 2.4360), and its useful life comes from a very specific combination: it is one of the few common alloys that handles seawater, caustic soda and hydrofluoric acid without flinching, while remaining affordable enough to justify when the application actually needs it.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400
The alloy is defined by ASTM B165 for seamless pipe and tube, with welded pipe covered by B725 and heat-exchanger tube by B163. The composition limits below are the official B165 values, not typical values - when you compare mill certificates against the spec, these are the numbers that matter.
| Element | Content, % | What It Does |
| Nickel (Ni) | 63.0 min | Base element; gives resistance to caustic alkalis and reducing conditions |
| Copper (Cu) | 28.0 - 34.0 | Adds resistance to seawater and non-oxidizing acids |
| Iron (Fe) | 2.5 max | Residual from melting |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.0 max | Deoxidizer in melting |
| Carbon (C) | 0.30 max | Higher than stainless steels; expected for this alloy |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 max | Residual element |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.024 max | Held low for hot workability |
Mechanical Properties (ASTM B165, Minimums)
Like most wrought nickel alloys, Monel 400 is supplied soft (annealed). It is not a high-strength alloy in the way duplex or super duplex is; you buy it for corrosion resistance, and if strength is the main driver another material should be on the shortlist instead.
| Property | Value (minimum) |
| Tensile strength | 483 MPa (70 ksi) |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset) | 172 MPa (25 ksi) |
| Elongation in 50 mm | 35% |
| Hardness | Typically below HB 217 in the annealed condition |
Physical Properties Worth Remembering
Two physical facts surprise people who have not used the alloy before. Monel 400 is magnetic. Nickel content above 60% keeps the material ferromagnetic at room temperature, which matters if the piping runs near instrumentation or magnetic level gauges - carbon steel would also be magnetic, but buyers comparing it against austenitic stainless steel (which is non-magnetic) often forget.
| Property | Value |
| Density | 8.80 g/cm3 |
| Melting range | 1300 - 1350 C |
| Modulus of elasticity | About 180 GPa |
| Magnetic response | Ferromagnetic at room temperature |
The density also changes the weight comparison. At 8.80 g/cm3, Monel 400 is about 11% heavier than 304 stainless (7.93 g/cm3) and nearly 12% heavier than carbon steel (7.85 g/cm3). For a long run of pipe, freight and support loads follow.
Where It Wins - and Where It Does Not
The alloy has a clear job description. It handles flowing seawater better than most stainless steels because it resists chloride pitting under conditions where 304 or 316 would pit. It is the standard material for hydrofluoric acid (HF) service - refinery alkylation units and acid-handling lines are almost always Monel. It also resists strong caustic soda solutions where stainless steels suffer stress-corrosion cracking.
It has hard limits. Oxidizing acids such as nitric acid are out, because the copper-nickel balance does not protect against them. High-temperature sulfur-containing gases also attack it, and it is not a substitute for 316L in general chloride process service - 316L is cheaper and usually adequate. The decision to specify Monel 400 is almost always driven by one of three fluids: seawater, HF, or concentrated caustic.
| Service | Performance |
| Flowing seawater | Excellent - standard material for marine piping and heat exchangers |
| Hydrofluoric acid (HF) | Reference material for alkylation and acid lines |
| Caustic soda (concentrated) | Very good up to high concentrations |
| Nitric acid, oxidizing acids | Poor - do not specify |
| High-temperature sulfur gases | Poor - corrosion rates rise quickly |
| General chlorides (e.g. brine) | Better than 304/316 only where pitting is severe; otherwise 316L is the better value |
Sizes and Supply Forms
Monel 400 pipe is typically ordered as seamless tube (ASTM B165, up to about NPS 8 in standard production, depending on the mill) or as welded pipe (B725). Heat-exchanger tube, which is what most of the marine and chemical orders actually are, follows B163 and is usually drawn and brighter-finished. Wall thicknesses follow the stainless schedule series (SCH 10S through XXS) because the pipe is measured against the same outside diameters as stainless pipe in most export markets.
Because the alloy is cold-drawn rather than hot-extruded for smaller sizes, tolerances follow drawn-tube practice. Ends are normally supplied plain or beveled, and lengths are single random, double random, or cut to order - cut lengths are common for heat-exchanger bundles, where every tube has a fixed length.
What to Put on the Purchase Order
A short order that simply says "Monel 400 pipe" usually comes back with something the buyer did not expect. The specification should carry, at minimum: the standard (B165, B725 or B163), the UNS (N04400), the NPS and schedule, the length condition, end finish, and the inspection requirements. Heat numbers are mandatory for traceability, and a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 is the standard expectation. PMI verification on receipt is cheap insurance - nickel-copper alloy is easy to misidentify visually, and it is expensive to discover after welding that the wrong grade went into the line.
