S304 stainless steel pipe is an austenitic grade belonging to the 18/8 chromium-nickel family. The nominal composition sits around 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which gives it solid corrosion resistance in general environments and decent formability.
The UNS designation is S30400. In European standards, it's 1.4301. One more variant worth knowing: 304L stainless steel pipe (UNS S30403) carries the same chromium-nickel base but limits carbon to 0.03% max instead of 0.08%. The "L" stands for low carbon, and it matters if the pipe will be welded.

Seamless vs Welded: The Difference Isn't Just Price
Seamless 304 stainless steel pipe is made by piercing a solid billet and elongating it over a mandrel. No weld seam means no weak point. The pressure rating is higher, the wall thickness is more consistent, and the inside surface is smoother.
Welded 304 stainless steel pipe starts as a flat strip that's formed into a tube and welded along the seam. Modern mills produce welded pipe that meets ASTM A312 tolerances, and for many applications-plumbing, architectural, low-pressure process work-it's perfectly adequate. The price difference is real (seamless typically runs 20–40% higher), so there's no point paying for it when you don't need it.
