Product Introduction

Read the mill certificate of a 15-5PH bar or pipe in the H900 condition and the numbers look familiar - 1,310 MPa tensile, 1,170 MPa yield, 10% elongation - almost identical to 17-4PH. The difference is not on the surface of the certificate; it is inside the material.

Stainless Steel 15-5PH Pipe was developed as a controlled variant of 17-4PH, with a tighter chromium-to-nickel balance, to remove one specific weakness: the shortfall in transverse ductility that 17-4PH shows in heavy sections. On a 15-5PH certificate, the longitudinal and transverse numbers are nearly the same, and the centre of a thick section behaves like the surface.

Why 15-5PH exists

17-4PH is a brilliant general-purpose precipitation-hardening stainless, but in large cross-sections it retains a small amount of delta ferrite - a residue of solidification that leaves the through-thickness and transverse properties weaker than the longitudinal ones. For small bars and thin plate that is a footnote; for a 200 mm valve body, a thick pump shaft or a forged structural part, the transverse numbers are where a component actually fails.

15-5PH narrows the chromium range (14.0 - 15.5% instead of 15.0 - 17.5%) and balances the nickel upward so that the as-cast structure is essentially free of delta ferrite. The result is an alloy with the same strength as 17-4PH but with uniform, isotropic properties across the section - the grade 17-4PH could not be in heavy sections.

The chemistry, and what each line controls

Element Range (wt %) What it controls
Carbon 0.07 max Held low; hardening comes from copper precipitation, not carbides
Chromium 14.0 - 15.5 Tighter than 17-4PH - the key to suppressing delta ferrite
Nickel 3.5 - 5.5 Balanced upward for austenite stability and uniform toughness
Copper 2.5 - 4.5 The precipitation element - creates the hardening response
Niobium + Tantalum 0.15 - 0.45 Grain refinement and precipitation control
Manganese / Silicon 1.00 / 1.00 max Deoxidation and melting control

The two numbers that separate 15-5PH from its parent are chromium and nickel. Lower chromium plus balanced nickel means the solidification path avoids the ferrite-forming corner of the diagram, and the finished section behaves the same in every direction.

What "isotropic" means on the shop floor

  • Transverse and longitudinal tensile and impact values sit close together on the certificate - the property gap that exists in 17-4PH heavy sections is largely closed
  • Through-thickness properties stay consistent in large diameters - a thick shaft is not weaker at its centre
  • Machined components hold their integrity in every orientation - orientation is no longer a hidden variable in design
  • Heat treatment response is uniform, so the H900-to-H1150 range behaves predictably across the whole section

For the designer this means one thing: the property you calculate in the drawing direction is the property you get in the finished part. That is why critical rotating and pressure-bearing components are specified in 15-5PH rather than its parent.

The strength ladder, in one view

Condition Aging temperature Tensile (MPa) Yield 0.2% (MPa) Elongation (%)
H900 482 °C 1310 min 1170 min 10 min
H925 496 °C 1170 min 1070 min 10 min
H1025 552 °C 1070 min 1000 min 12 min
H1075 579 °C 1000 min 860 min 13 min
H1100 593 °C 965 min 795 min 14 min
H1150 621 °C 930 min 725 min 16 min

The ladder mirrors 17-4PH, which is exactly the point: the buyer gets the full precipitation-hardening strength range, plus the uniform-section behaviour that the parent grade cannot deliver in big parts.

Standards and product forms

Form Standard Notes
Bar / rod ASTM A564 (Grade XM-12) The classic form for machined components
Aerospace bar AMS 5659 Often specified as VAR or ESR remelted for critical rotating parts
Plate / sheet AMS 5862 Aerospace plate and sheet
Forgings ASTM A705 (XM-12) Valve bodies, pump casings, structural forgings

European buyers meet the same material as 1.4545 or X5CrNiCuNb16-4. Pipe and tube made from 15-5PH is typically produced from A564 bar by machining or by seamless tube routes, then supplied in the specified aged condition - the condition code must be named on the order.

Where the isotropic grade is the answer

  • Aerospace structural components and landing-gear parts - high strength with dependable through-thickness toughness
  • Nuclear valve stems, bodies and actuator parts - uniform properties and traceable melting
  • Oilfield downhole tools and wellhead components - high hardness in heavy sections under sour and chloride exposure
  • Pump shafts and rotating shafts - fatigue performance in every direction, not just the rolling direction
  • Precision machined parts where distortion after heat treatment must be minimised

Buying notes that protect the order

  • Name the standard and grade: ASTM A564 XM-12 / UNS S15500, or AMS 5659 for aerospace
  • Name the condition: H900 through H1150 - never order "annealed only" if the finished part needs strength
  • For rotating and critical parts, ask whether the melt was VAR or ESR remelted and confirm it on the certificate
  • Check the certificate for transverse values if the section is heavy - that is where 15-5PH proves itself
  • Confirm the heat-treatment record: solution anneal temperature and the exact aging cycle

15-5PH is not a stronger 17-4PH. It is a more trustworthy one - the same precipitation-hardening strength, delivered uniformly across every millimetre of the section. When the component is large, rotating, pressure-bearing, or held to aerospace standards, that uniformity is the property that decides the grade.
