When standard 304 stainless steel is exposed to temperatures between 425°C and 815°C (such as during welding or high-temperature use), carbon (C) diffuses into grain boundaries and combines with chromium (Cr) to form chromium carbides (Cr23C6). This causes areas near grain boundaries to become "chromium-depleted," meaning the chromium content falls below the critical value (approximately 12%) required to maintain a passive film. Corrosion preferentially occurs in these areas, leading to a sharp decrease in material strength and even shattering.

The titanium (Ti) in S321 has a much higher affinity for carbon (C) than chromium does for carbon. Therefore, titanium preferentially combines with carbon to form stable titanium carbides (TiC). This effectively "fixes" the carbon, preventing the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, thereby fundamentally eliminating the formation of chromium-depleted zones and endowing the material with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion.

• Formability: It has a high work-hardening rate but can also be softened by annealing. It is easy to cut, bend, deep-draw, and weld.
• Weldability: All standard welding methods produce good results. To maintain optimal corrosion resistance, post-welding annealing is recommended. Due to its stability, it can even be used as a "welding rod" for welding 304 stainless steel to prevent corrosion in the weld bead.
