UNS N08904 Plate Corrosion Resistance

SS 904L's high levels of chromium and molybdenum, along with the beneficial presence of copper, equip this alloy to withstand severe acidic environments. It is particularly effective in resisting the corrosive effects of sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids, which makes it a popular choice in chemical plants and processing equipment. In marine and offshore applications, 904L's resistance to chloride-induced corrosion is significantly superior to that of more conventional grades like 316L. This performance is further enhanced by its ability to maintain a passive oxide layer, ensuring long-term durability even when exposed to aggressive media.

 

ASTM A240 904L Processing and Fabrication

Stainless Steel 904L's low carbon content and homogeneous austenitic structure ensure excellent weldability, enabling the material to be joined using standard welding techniques such as TIG, MIG, and laser beam welding without the need for extensive preheating or post-weld heat treatment. The alloy's good formability enables it to be bent, pressed, and shaped into complex geometries required for specialized industrial applications.

Types of  Stainless Steel 904L Plate

Hot-rolled

Hot-rolled 904L steel plate is formed by rolling above the recrystallization temperature, and the surface forms a rough oxide scale due to oxidation. It is suitable for structural parts with low requirements for surface finish (such as chemical equipment support frame).

Cold-rolled

Cold-rolled 904L steel plate is rolled at room temperature, with a smooth surface and a thickness accuracy of ±0.05mm, which is suitable for equipment that requires high precision or subsequent processing (such as welding, stamping) (such as the inner wall of pharmaceutical reactor).
