ASTM A240 UNS S31254 chemical properties
The exceptional performance of S31254 is rooted in its meticulously balanced chemical composition. The alloy is fortified with high levels of chromium (19.5–20.5%), nickel (17.5–18.5%), and molybdenum (6–6.5%), complemented by controlled additions of nitrogen (0.18–0.22%) and copper (0.5–1.0%). Chromium enhances oxidation resistance by forming a passive oxide layer, while molybdenum and nitrogen synergistically boost resistance to localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion.

With a tensile strength of 650–850 MPa and elongation exceeding 35%, the alloy combines high strength with remarkable ductility, enabling its use in structurally demanding applications. Its toughness is retained at cryogenic temperatures. The physical properties, including a thermal expansion coefficient similar to carbon steel and thermal conductivity of 15 W/m·K, ensure compatibility with traditional fabrication techniques. Moreover, the alloy's magnetic permeability remains low due to its fully austenitic structure.

uNS S31254 sheet Corrosion Resistance
In environments where chlorides, sulfuric acid, or brine are prevalent, conventional stainless steels often succumb to rapid degradation. S31254, however, thrives in these conditions. For instance, in seawater applications-where chloride concentrations are high-the alloy demonstrates negligible pitting even after prolonged exposure. Its resistance to sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations (up to 40% at 20°C) further expands its utility in chemical processing equipment.
s31254 steel Sheet Fabrication and Machining Considerations
Welding of 254smo requires low heat input methods such as TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or laser welding to prevent segregation of alloying elements. Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary, but pickling or passivation is recommended to restore the passive oxide layer. Machining S31254 demands tools with high wear resistance, as the alloy's toughness and tendency to work-hardening can lead to rapid tool wear.

Cold working should avoid over-hardening, intermediate annealing is recommended.
Hot working temperature range: 1150-900°C, solution treatment is required after processing (1050-1150°C rapid cooling).
