Duplex 2205 is a duplex stainless steel alloy (UNS S31803/S32250, EN 1.4462) that combines roughly 22% chromium, 5–6% nickel, 3% molybdenum, plus nitrogen and small alloying elements. Duplex 2205 is widely specified under ASTM/ASME standards (e.g. ASTM A790/A789, ASME SA790/SA789) for ferritic/austenitic pipe and tubing. Equivalent grades include UNS S31803 and UNS S32250 (1.4462/F51 and F60).

Duplex 2205 Corrosion Resistance

2205 resists pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking far better than 300-series SS. Its high Cr+Mo content (and added N) give excellent pitting resistance.

With yield strength roughly 450–550 MPa and tensile 620–800 MPa, 2205 duplex is about twice as strong as 304/316 (yield ~200 MPa). This high strength means thinner-wall pipes (and lighter systems) can be used without sacrificing performance. For high-pressure or load-bearing applications, 2205 offers a large safety margin.

S31803 Cost-Effectiveness

Despite its premium performance, 2205 can be more economical than super-duplex or high-Ni alloys. Its lower nickel (5–6%) content means raw material cost is often lower than 316 (which has ~10% Ni). At the same time, using thinner gages (due to higher strength) reduces tonnage.

EN 1.4462 Reduced Maintenance and Longevity

2205's superior resistance to chloride corrosion and cracking translates directly into less downtime and repairs. Where 304/316 pipe might need frequent inspections or replacement in seawater or sour environments, 2205 typically requires only routine inspection.

ASME SA790 2205 pipe Weldability and Fabrication

2205 can be welded using common processes (TIG/MIG, etc.) with appropriate controls. It responds well to standard filler metals (e.g. AWS S2205/ERNiCrMo-3) and low heat input to preserve duplex balance.

S31803 steel pipe Higher Strength-to-Weight

Because of its high strength, 2205 allows thinner-wall piping, which reduces weight. This is critical in offshore or aerospace applications where weight matters.For large pipe runs or elevated installations, this can lower support and foundation costs.
