UNS S31254, also known as Alloy 254 SMO or EN 1.4547 is a premium super-austenitic stainless steel designed for the most aggressive corrosive environments. ss254smo Exceptional Corrosion Resistance

The high Cr–Mo–N alloying gives S31254 outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue and general corrosion. In chloride or bromide environments ,S31254 maintains integrity where 316L/304 fail. It also resists chlorinated cleaning agents and oxidizing acids very well.

 

smo254 High Mechanical Strength

S31254 has roughly twice the yield strength of 316/304 stainless. This allows thinner sections or higher pressure ratings in equipment. Its tensile strength (~690–850 MPa in sheet/coil, ≤220 HB) mean robust resistance to deformation and wear. At the same time, its high ductility (elongation ≥35%) ensures toughness in service and ease of forming.

 

6mo High Temperature Performance

S31254 is stable to elevated temperatures. Solution-annealed above ~1150 °C, it retains strength and resists scaling up to ~600–650 °C in air, far better than 904L (which softens above ~400 °C). Its melting point (~1320–1390 °C) is high for stainless steel. Thermal conductivity is relatively high (~14 W/m·K), which helps in heat-exchanger duties.

 

S31254 Hot and Cold rolling Sheet Fabricability and Safety

S31254 offers good formability and very good weldability. It welds without pre-heating, though it work-hardens quickly – so proper filler (AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3) and technique are recommended. Its low carbon/Ni make it resistant to sigma-phase or carbide sensitization; it maintains ductility even at cryogenic temperatures.
