What is S31803 pipe material?

S31803 is not ordinary stainless steel, it is a duplex stainless steel. Its name "duplex" reveals the key to its success: the microstructure consists of approximately 50% ferrite (α) and 50% austenite (γ). This exquisite combination is achieved through precise control of chemical composition (especially nitrogen content) and heat treatment process, giving the material comprehensive performance that exceeds single-phase stainless steel.

  • High strength: The ferrite phase provides an extremely high strength foundation. The yield strength of S31803 (≥450 MPa) is usually more than twice that of 304/316 austenitic stainless steel (≥205 MPa), and is even close to the level of some low-alloy steels. This allows the design of thinner-walled pipes, significantly reducing equipment weight, material costs and installation difficulties.

 

  • Good toughness: The austenite phase contributes excellent toughness and ductility, especially at low temperatures. This combination of strength and toughness effectively resists impact loads, stress fluctuations and accidental mechanical damage, greatly reduces the risk of brittle fracture, and improves the overall safety and reliability of the pipeline system.

  • Resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC): The ferrite phase of S31803 is naturally highly resistant to SCC, making it far superior to 304/316L in this field, making it an ideal choice for seawater cooling systems, offshore platforms, and chemical plants to handle chlorine-containing solutions.

 

  • Resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion: High content of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and nitrogen (N) significantly improves its pitting Resistance equivalent (PREN). The PREN value of S31803 is usually between 33-35 (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N), which is much higher than 316L (~25), making it effectively resistant to localized corrosion in environments with high chloride ion concentrations.

 

  • Overall corrosion resistance: It performs well in a variety of acids (such as dilute sulfuric acid, organic acids), alkalis, and salt solutions, and its wear corrosion and corrosion fatigue resistance are also better than ordinary austenitic steels.

Modern welding technology (such as TIG, PAW, SAW with suitable welding materials) can effectively control the phase balance of the welding heat affected zone (HAZ) to obtain welds that match the properties of the parent material. Although the welding requirements are more stringent than 304/316 (heat input and interlayer temperature need to be controlled), its weldability has been widely verified in engineering practice.
