Incoloy 825 seamless and welded pipe is the alloy people specify when 316L or 254 SMO cannot survive the combination of chlorides, acids, and sour gas. Its nickel-iron-chromium base, with deliberate molybdenum and copper additions, gives it strong resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acids, chloride stress-corrosion cracking, pitting, and sour service. It is used in chemical processing, oil and gas production, flue gas desulfurization, seawater cooling, and marine systems across the Middle East and Europe.

Standards and Product Forms
| Standard | Product Form | Typical Size Range | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM B423 / ASME SB423 | Seamless and welded nickel-iron-chromium alloy pipe | NPS ½" – 12" seamless; larger welded | Process piping, sour service, chemical lines |
| ASTM B705 / ASME SB705 | Welded Incoloy 825 pipe | NPS ½" – 24" | Large-diameter lines, cost-sensitive projects |
| ASTM B704 / ASME SB704 | Welded Incoloy 825 tube | OD 6 mm – 219 mm | Condensers, heat exchangers, instrumentation |
| ASTM B163 / ASME SB163 | Seamless nickel alloy condenser/superheater tube | Various | Heat-exchanger and superheater tubing |
| ASTM B751 / ASME SB751 | General requirements for nickel alloy tube | Various | Supporting specification for B704/B705 |
| ASTM B829 / ASME SB829 | Seamless nickel alloy tube | OD 6 mm – 219 mm | High-pressure tubing |
| ASTM B366 / ASME SB366 | Nickel alloy fittings | NPS ½" – 48" | Buttweld and forged fittings |
For most refinery, chemical, and marine applications, ASTM B423 seamless pipe is the default. ASTM B705 welded pipe is selected when larger diameters or thinner walls are needed. ASTM B163/B704 is specified when the item is tubing for heat exchangers or instrumentation.
Chemical Composition (UNS N08825 / W.Nr. 2.4858)
| Element | Content (%) - ASTM B423 |
|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 38.0 – 46.0 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 19.5 – 23.5 |
| Iron (Fe) | 22.0 min |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.5 – 3.5 |
| Copper (Cu) | 1.5 – 3.0 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.6 – 1.2 |
| Carbon (C) max | 0.05 |
| Manganese (Mn) max | 1.0 |
| Silicon (Si) max | 0.5 |
| Sulfur (S) max | 0.03 |
The molybdenum and copper additions are what distinguish 825 from the Incoloy 800 family. Molybdenum improves pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides. Copper improves resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Titanium stabilizes the alloy against sensitization during welding, which is why 825 is normally used in the as-welded condition.

Incoloy 825 vs Alternatives in Corrosive Service
| Service | 825 | 800HT | C276 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sour gas with chlorides, < 200 °C | Excellent | Limited | Excellent | 825 is usually the cost-effective choice |
| Sulfuric acid, < 80 °C | Excellent | Poor | Excellent | 825 matches C276 in many dilute-to-medium acids |
| Seawater / marine | Excellent | Fair | Excellent | 825 and C276 both widely used |
| Furnace tube > 700 °C | Not suitable | Excellent | Not suitable | 800HT is the high-temperature choice |
| Hydrochloric acid, concentrated | Good | Poor | Excellent | C276 preferred for strong HCl |
| Cost premium | Medium-high | Medium | High | 825 often bridges 800HT and C276 economics |
