Both SS316 and SS316L are austenitic stainless steels with a wide range of applications in industry and life. They both have good corrosion resistance, heat resistance and processing performance, but due to slight differences in composition and performance, each has its own advantages in different usage scenarios.

Chemical composition differences between Stainless steel 316 and 316L
The carbon content of SS316 ranges from 0.03% to 0.08%, and it also contains 2% to 3% of molybdenum, in addition to about 16% to 18% of chromium, 10% to 14% of nickel and other elements.
SS316L is a low-carbon version of SS316, with a significantly lower carbon content of no more than 0.03%, and a molybdenum content similar to SS316, also around 2% to 3%, and the chromium and nickel content ranges are basically the same as SS316.

Comparison of mechanical properties between ss316 and ss316L
At room temperature, the tensile strength of SS316 is not less than 515MPa, the yield strength is not less than 205MPa, the elongation is not less than 40%, and the hardness is not more than 217HB.
Due to the low carbon content, the tensile strength and yield strength of SS316L are slightly lower than those of SS316, with the tensile strength not less than 485MPa and the yield strength not less than 170MPa. However, the elongation is the same as that of SS316, not less than 40%, and the hardness is not more than 217HB.
Comparison of corrosion resistance between Stainless steel S31600 and S31603
When SS316 is welded or in a high temperature environment for a long time, carbon easily combines with chromium to form chromium carbide, resulting in a decrease in the chromium content near the grain boundary, thereby increasing the tendency of intergranular corrosion. However, due to its extremely low carbon content, SS316L has a much lower possibility of forming chromium carbide.
In chloride-containing environments, such as seawater and salt solutions, SS316 and SS316L also have different pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. SS316 is slightly more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion than SS316L, mainly because SS316 has a slightly higher carbon content, which affects its corrosion behavior in this environment to a certain extent.
| Property | SS316 (UNS S31600) | SS316L (UNS S31603) |
| Carbon (C) | 0.08% Max | 0.03% Max |
| Nickel (Ni) | 10.0 - 14.0% | 10.0 - 14.0% |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.0 - 3.0% | 2.0 - 3.0% |
| Yield Strength | Higher (~290 MPa) | Slightly Lower (~190 MPa) |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent (Chloride) | Superior (Post-Welding) |
Differences in processing performance between UNS S31600 and UNS S31603
In terms of welding performance, SS316L shows certain advantages. Due to its low carbon content, during the welding process, the amount of chromium carbide formed by carbon and chromium is less, so the risk of intergranular corrosion at the welded joint is lower and the welding performance is better.
Application fields
SS316 is often used in environments with high requirements for corrosion resistance and high operating temperatures.
SS316L is more suitable for applications where heat treatment cannot be performed after welding and for environments that are sensitive to intergranular corrosion.
