304 stainless steel, also known as AISI 304 or UNS S30400, consists primarily of chromium (17.5-19.5%) and nickel (8-10.5%), with small amounts of other elements. ASTM A240 304 is a specification for chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. ss 304 plate is known for its excellent corrosion resistance. Also having good heat resistance, 304 plate is typically used at a continuous service temperature of about 870°C (1,600°F), with short exposures to temperatures up to about 925°C (1,700°F).

Mechanical Properties of Annealed 304 Stainless Steel Plate
- Tensile strength: Tensile strength range of 515 to 620 megapascals (MPa) or 75,000 to 90,000 pounds per square inch (psi).
- Yield strength: Yield strength is usually about 205 MPa (30,000 psi).
- Elongation: elongation of about 40% or higher
- Hardness: Annealed condition, 1.4301 aisi 304 plates hardness of about 70 on the Rockwell B scale (HRB).
- Modulus of Elasticity: The modulus of elasticity or Young's modulus is approximately 193 gigapascals (GPa) or 28 million pounds per square inch (psi).

ASME SA 240 type 304 Plate Heat Treatment
Solution Annealing: Solution Annealing is one of the most commonly used heat treatment methods. By heating the 304 stainless steel plate to a temperature range of about 1010°C to 1120°C (1850°F to 2050°F), and then cooling it rapidly, the intergranular carbides inside the material can be eliminated and its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties can be improved.
