17 4ph key composition

17: Approximately 17% chromium (Cr), which provides the stainless steel's fundamental corrosion resistance.

4: Approximately 4% nickel (Ni), which helps stabilize the austenite phase but forms martensite after heat treatment.

PH: Precipitation hardening, its most critical characteristic.

 

17 4 ph ss High strength-to-weight ratio

This is its most significant advantage. Through heat treatment, 17-4PH can easily achieve tensile strengths exceeding 1000 MPa, and even exceeding 1300 MPa (depending on the H temper), significantly exceeding the approximately 500-600 MPa of annealed austenitic stainless steel. This allows thinner sheet materials to be used in designs requiring both lightweight and high strength, reducing overall weight.

In high H conditions (e.g., H900), its hardness can reach over HRC 40, providing excellent resistance to mechanical wear, fretting wear, and impact wear.

Its corrosion resistance surpasses that of any other martensitic stainless steel and even rivals that of 304 stainless steel in certain environments. It exhibits excellent resistance to air, freshwater, seawater, steam, as well as alkalis, acids, and saline solutions, especially in the age-hardened state.

Unlike high-alloy steels that require complex quenching and precise temperature control, 17-4PH has a relatively simple heat treatment process. After solution treatment at approximately 1040°C, it becomes very soft (Condition A), making it easy to machine. A single aging treatment at a relatively low temperature range of 480-620°C then achieves the desired mechanical properties. Deformation is minimal throughout the entire process.

 

17 4 ph sst Machinability (in the Solution Condition)

In the solution-treated (A temper), 17-4PH plate has a low hardness (approximately HRC 30) and good ductility, making it suitable for forming operations such as shearing, stamping, bending, drilling, and turning and milling. All complex machining is performed in this soft state, followed by a simple aging treatment to achieve final strength.

1.4542 17 4ph sheet manufacture process

• Cutting: Plasma, laser, water jet, or wire cutting can be used. Due to its high strength, shearing requires a higher tonnage.
• Forming: In the A temper, it can be cold-bent and stamped. However, due to its higher strength (even in the A temper), the required springback compensation and forming forces are greater than those of mild steel or 304 stainless steel.
• Welding: 17-4PH is weldable, but caution is required. Welding consumables of matching composition (such as ER630) are typically used.
• Machining: In the A temper, its machinability is similar to that of 304 stainless steel. Once age-hardened, machining becomes difficult, requiring the use of carbide tools, lower cutting speeds, and ample coolant.
