Machining and Cold Forming

Due to its high alloy content, 317L work-hardens rapidly. Fabricators should use heavy, constant feeds, rigid setups, and high-quality sulfurized lubricants. Slow speeds and sharp tooling help prevent the material from glazing.

Welding Practices

317L is highly weldable using standard fusion methods (such as TIG and MIG); however, oxyacetylene welding must be avoided to prevent carbon pickup. To maintain optimal corrosion resistance across the weld zone, engineers specify over-alloyed filler metals like AWS E317L or ER317L.

Thermal Treatment

While 317L cannot be hardened via heat treatment, internal stresses from heavy forming can be relieved through solution annealing at 1850°F to 2050°F (1010°C to 1121°C), followed by a rapid water quench.

Chemical and Petrochemical: Acetic, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid plants, cracked gas quenching systems in ethylene plants and organic synthesis processes containing chlorides.

Marine Engineering and Seawater Desalination: Seawater cooling piping systems, preheaters, pumps, and piping in seawater desalination plants; and high-pressure seawater systems on ships.

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Systems: Wet areas most susceptible to corrosion, such as the absorber spray layer, demister, and outlet flue.

Paper Industry: Equipment and piping in the pulp bleaching process (ClO₂ environment).

Pharmaceutical and Food Industries: Demanding process steps requiring extreme cleanliness and corrosion resistance.
