Manufacture process of alloy 201 plate
- Melting: Usually vacuum induction melting (VIM) or electric arc furnace (EAF) melting, followed by argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) process to achieve precise low carbon content and control impurity levels.
- Forging: Ingots are hot forged or cast into slabs suitable for rolling.
- Hot Rolling: Slabs are heated and rolled under controlled conditions to achieve the desired intermediate thickness.
- Cold Rolling: To achieve thinner gauges and tighter tolerances/surface finishes, hot rolled plates may require further cold rolling. Intermediate annealing is essential to maintain machinability.
- Solution Annealing: The final critical step is to heat the plate to a certain temperature range (usually 705°C - 925°C / 1300°F - 1700°F) and then cool it rapidly (usually water quenching). This dissolves any secondary phases and restores the highest corrosion resistance, ductility and uniformity.
