Its main chemical composition is: chromium (Cr) 19.5%-20.5%, nickel (Ni) 17.5%-18.5%, molybdenum (Mo) 6.0%-6.5%, nitrogen (N) 0.18%-0.22%, and a moderate amount of copper (Cu: 0.5%-1.0%). The extremely high molybdenum content and the addition of nitrogen are particularly critical to this composition design.

In terms of physical properties, 254SMO has a density of approximately 8.24 g/cm³, a melting point range of 1320-1390°C, and is non-magnetic. Its tensile strength σb ≥ 650 MPa, yield strength σb ≥ 310 MPa, elongation δ ≥ 40%, and hardness range from 182 to 223 (HB).

 

Mechanical Properties of astm uns 31254 plate

254SMO exhibits stable and excellent mechanical properties across various temperatures. At room temperature (25°C), its yield strength is ≥ 300 MPa, its tensile strength reaches 650-800 MPa, its elongation is ≥ 35%, and its impact toughness is 150 J.

 

UNS S31254 exhibits excellent stability as the temperature increases. At 300°C, its yield strength remains at 270 MPa, its tensile strength is 600 MPa, and its elongation even increases to 40%. At 500°C, its yield strength remains at 240 MPa, its tensile strength reaches 550 MPa, and its elongation increases to 45%.

 

Smo 254 also performs well at low temperatures. At -50°C, its yield strength increases to 320 MPa, its tensile strength reaches 700 MPa, and its impact toughness increases to 170 J, demonstrating that the material maintains good resistance to brittle fracture even at low temperatures.

Manufacture Process pf s31254 plate

Hot working is recommended within the 1150-950°C temperature range, followed by air or water cooling. During cold working, due to the material's hardening index n≈0.55, an intermediate annealing treatment (approximately 1100°C) is required. Machining requires the use of carbide tools, a low-speed, high-feed strategy, and emulsion cooling to achieve a surface finish of Ra ≤ 0.4 μm.
