The 904L Safeguard: With a minimum of 4% molybdenum, 904L cold rolled sheet creates a highly stable surface film that resists chloride-ion penetration. This makes it an ideal middle-tier choice between standard austenitics and highly premium 6% Mo super-austenitics or duplex grades.
Critical Metallurgy Warning: High-Temperature Limitations
While 904L provides excellent oxidation resistance, its microstructure is prone to phase instability when exposed to sustained temperatures above 400°C (752°F). Extended operation in this thermal band risks the precipitation of brittle intermetallic phases (such as sigma phase), which dramatically lowers both impact toughness and corrosion resistance. Keep operational applications well within the certified sub-400°C limits.
Welding Mechanics: Because 904L solidifies into a fully austenitic structure, it is inherently more susceptible to hot cracking than standard grades that retain a trace percentage of delta ferrite.
- Avoid any pre-heating or post-weld thermal treatments.
- Keep heat input low to preserve structural integrity, and match the base material with over-alloyed consumables (such as E385 or ER385) to offset alloy segregation in the weld pool.
Work Hardening Behavior: The high nickel and manganese content means 904L sheet work-hardens rapidly. When machining or blanking, use rigid setups, heavy constant feeds, and sharp tooling to cut below the work-hardened zone left by preceding passes.
