Nickel 201 Plate UNS N02201 is commercially pure wrought nickel - 99.0% Ni minimum - with carbon held to 0.02% max. That carbon figure is the entire point of the grade. Ordinary Nickel 200 carries up to 0.15% C; above about 315 °C, that carbon migrates to grain boundaries as graphitic carbon over long exposure, and the plate loses ductility the way a cold weld rod snaps. With carbon capped at 0.02%, Nickel 201 keeps its toughness in elevated-temperature caustic service - which is why it, not Nickel 200, is the specified plate anywhere the metal sits hot and loaded.

Two rows of that table trip buyers up. First, the strength: 345/83 is low by pressure-vessel instincts, because pure nickel plate is rarely bought for strength at all - it is bought for corrosion behavior in caustic and for purity. Cold work can more than double the tensile, but cold-worked nickel recrystallizes and drops back when heated, so design always assumes the annealed values. Second, the Curie temperature: below about 358 °C the plate is ferromagnetic, which surprises buyers running magnetic sorting or eddy-current checks on incoming material. It is not a defect or a wrong-grade indicator; it is a property of pure nickel.

If a quotation's declared weight does not match thickness × 8.89 within a percent or two, the metal under the stencil is worth questioning before the price is.
Where the plate earns its keep - and its boundaries
Nickel 201 plate is the standard solid material for caustic soda in every concentration, including evaporated liquors and molten anhydrous NaOH at temperature, where its high-nickel, chromium-free surface simply has nothing for alkali to attack. The same chemistry carries it through alkaline salt solutions, anhydrous HF handling, and dry chlorine or HCl gas at elevated temperature. Its conductivity and purity also make thin-gauge sheet a standard electrode and bus material in chlor-alkali and electroplating plants.
The boundary is the mirror image of the caustic strength: oxidizing media are off the list. Nitric acid, aerated oxidizing acids and wet chlorine destroy the surface pure nickel depends on, and any chloride-rich stagnant environment will pit it. Buyers in sour or seawater service should be looking at 825 or 625 plate instead - a different product at a different price.
For buyers along the UAE Gulf chlor-alkali corridor - the caustic trade that moves through Jebel Ali - the practical checklist is short: NaOH concentration and maximum metal temperature decide the grade; above the boiling curve of concentrated liquor or into molten caustic, 201 plate is the default; below it, 316L may genuinely be enough, and we will say so.
