Nickel Alloy 201 (UNS N02201) is a low-carbon version of commercially pure nickel. It was originally designed to address the embrittlement of Nickel 200 at high temperatures (above 315°C) due to carbide precipitation at grain boundaries. By strictly controlling the carbon content to an extremely low level, Alloy 201 retains all the excellent properties of pure nickel while significantly improving its stability at high temperatures.

Alloy 201 exhibits excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, including caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide) at room temperature, its most common application.

It is stable in neutral and alkaline salt solutions, as well as many organic compounds.
It has excellent resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking (Cl-SCC), surpassing that of many stainless steels.
It is also usable in dry halogen environments (such as chlorine and fluorine), especially at high temperatures.

As a low-carbon version, Alloy 201 effectively avoids embrittlement caused by the precipitation of grain-boundary carbides (Ni₃C) within the temperature range of 315°C to 650°C, maintaining good toughness and strength. This ensures extended service life in applications such as high-temperature caustic treatment and heat-treating furnace components.

Mechanical Strength and Ductility: Its strength and hardness can be significantly increased through cold working while maintaining adequate formability.

Low Outgassing and High Vacuum Stability: Its extremely low carbon and gas content makes it an ideal choice for electronic tubes, vacuum interrupters, and aerospace seals, preventing "outgassing" and internal contamination at high vacuum temperatures.

Magnetic and Thermoelectric Properties: It exhibits ferromagnetism below the Curie temperature (approximately 360°C), but its magnetic permeability is generally low. More importantly, it possesses thermoelectric properties close to pure nickel, making it a key material for thermocouples (such as the negative electrode in nickel-chromium-nickel-silicon thermocouples) and resistor elements.
