S317L (UNS S31703) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel designed for highly corrosive environments, especially for working conditions containing chlorides, sulfides and acidic media. As a low-carbon variant of 317 stainless steel, it exhibits better anti-sensitization and corrosion resistance in welding and high-temperature scenarios, and is widely used in chemical, petroleum, marine engineering and other fields.

The chemical composition of S317L is based on iron (Fe), and the key alloying elements include chromium (Cr, 18-20%), nickel (Ni, 11-15%), molybdenum (Mo, 3-4%), and strictly controls the carbon (C≤0.03%) and nitrogen (N≤0.10%) content.

Density and thermal conductivity: The density is about 8.0 g/cm³, which is similar to most austenitic stainless steels, the thermal conductivity is low (15 W/m·K, 100°C), and attention should be paid to heat accumulation during hot working.

High temperature tolerance of 317l sheet

Stable oxidation resistance can be maintained below 600°C, and the upper limit of short-term use temperature can reach 800°C, but long-term exposure to the 550-850°C range should be avoided to prevent embrittlement caused by precipitation of σ phase.

Processing and welding

Cold forming process of ss 317l

High work hardening rate requires progressive forming to avoid cracking caused by single large deformation; after forming, solution treatment (1050-1150°C fast cooling) is recommended to restore material toughness.

Hot rolling or forging temperature should be controlled at 1200-950°C, and the final rolling temperature should not be lower than 850°C to prevent carbide precipitation.

Welding of Stainless steel UNS S31703

Low-carbon or niobium-containing welding materials (such as ER317L, ER320LR) are preferred, and TIG or MIG welding is used; the interlayer temperature is controlled below 150°C to reduce the risk of sensitization in the heat-affected zone, no heat treatment is required after welding, but the welding slag needs to be thoroughly cleaned to avoid local corrosion.
