Corrosion Resistance of ss317 stainless steel
Overall Corrosion Resistance: Its corrosion resistance surpasses that of 304 and 316 series stainless steels in a wide range of organic and inorganic acids and alkaline solutions.
Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: This is the primary benefit of the high molybdenum content. Molybdenum effectively resists localized corrosion caused by chloride ions. Its pitting resistance equivalent (PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N) is typically above 35, surpassing that of the 316 series (PREN approximately 26-30).
Resistance to Intergranular Corrosion: The low-carbon version of SS317L is less susceptible to intergranular corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation after welding. While intergranular corrosion can still occur after prolonged exposure in the sensitizing temperature range (approximately 450-850°C), the risk is much lower than with non-low-carbon grades.
Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance: Austenitic stainless steels are at risk of stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments. SS317 outperforms 304 in performance, but is not completely immune in high-temperature, high-concentration chloride environments.

Processing and Fabrication of uns s31700 plate
Hot Working: Hot working temperatures range from 1150-900°C. Solution annealing (heating to 1040-1150°C followed by rapid cooling) should be performed after processing to restore optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Cold Working: SS317 can be formed through cold rolling, cold bending, stamping, and other methods. Due to its high work hardening rate, forming requires greater forces, and intermediate annealing may be required for complex forms.
Machining: Its austenitic structure results in high machinability, resulting in relatively poor machinability. Carbide tools, low cutting speeds and feeds, and ample coolant are required.
Welding: SS317L exhibits good weldability. Welding methods include manual arc welding, tungsten inert gas welding, and metal inert gas welding. Suitable welding consumables, such as ER317L or higher alloy consumables (such as ER320LR), are recommended for optimal weld performance. Heat input should be controlled during welding to avoid overheating.
Comparison with Other Stainless Steels
Comparison with 316/L: SS317's primary advantage lies in its higher molybdenum content, which provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in environments with high chloride concentrations. It is an upgrade to 316/L for more corrosive environments.
Comparison with 304/L: 304/L does not contain molybdenum and has very weak chloride corrosion resistance. SS317 offers comprehensive performance advantages over 304/L.
Comparison with super-austenitic stainless steels (such as 904L and 254 SMO): Super-austenitic stainless steels contain higher levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen (PREN > 40), resulting in corrosion resistance far exceeding that of SS317. SS317 can be considered a high-performance and cost-effective choice between 316/L and super austenitic stainless steel.
