Its corrosion resistance in reducing acids (such as dilute sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid) is limited, generally inferior to that of molybdenum-containing 316/316H.

Due to the absence of molybdenum, its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance (especially in chloride-containing environments) is inferior to that of 316/316H or stainless steels with higher molybdenum content (such as 317L). Care should be taken in environments with high chloride ion concentrations (such as seawater cooling).

Forging and rolling are typically performed in the 1150-900°C range. Final forging/rolling temperatures should be kept low to avoid excessive deformation resistance and potential cracking. Heating is performed evenly to avoid local overheating. Solution treatment is usually required after hot working.

 

tp 347h Cold Working

It exhibits good cold formability (bending, stamping, deep drawing), but has a higher work hardening rate (higher than carbon steel). Higher forming forces are required, and annealing may be necessary to restore plasticity. Stress relief annealing should be considered after forming (especially for components serving in corrosive or stress corrosion-sensitive environments).
