This is the primary reason to choose 304L over 304. The extremely low carbon content virtually eliminates the risk of harmful chromium carbide precipitation when the heat-affected zone (HAZ) experiences the sensitizing temperature range. This provides excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion as-welded, often eliminating the need for expensive and complex solution annealing. This significantly simplifies manufacturing processes and reduces costs.

Atmospheric Environment: Excellent corrosion resistance in rural, urban, and light industrial atmospheres, maintaining long-term aesthetic appeal.
Aqueous Environment: Good resistance to fresh water, steam, and condensate. Performance is acceptable in mild chloride environments (such as domestic water), but high chloride concentrations (such as seawater and de-icing salts) can cause pitting and crevice corrosion, requiring consideration of higher-grade stainless steels (such as 316L).
Chemical Media: Good corrosion resistance to a wide range of organic chemicals (such as acetic, citric, and lactic acids), inorganic chemicals (such as nitric and phosphoric acids at low temperatures and low concentrations), and food processing media (juices and dairy products). Corrosion resistance is limited in reducing acids (such as sulfuric and hydrochloric acids).
High-Temperature Oxidation: Good resistance to oxidation (formation of a protective chromium oxide layer on the surface) in intermittent use below 870°C and continuous use below 925°C.

Gr 304L Formability

Cold Working: It exhibits an extremely high work hardening rate, allowing for complex forming operations such as deep drawing, spinning, roll bending, and press bending. However, caution should be exercised regarding the increased strength and decreased ductility associated with hardening, and intermediate annealing (solution treatment) may be necessary.

Hot Working: Hot working such as forging and rolling can be performed within the 1149-1260°C range. Rapid cooling (e.g., water quenching) is required to maintain optimal corrosion resistance and prevent carbide precipitation.
