stainless steel 904l High chromium and high molybdenum composition

The typical composition contains about 20% chromium (Cr) and 4.5% molybdenum (Mo). Chromium forms a dense passive film to resist oxidizing environment, while molybdenum significantly enhances the pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in reducing acidic media (especially chloride ion environment). Its pitting resistance equivalent value (PREN = %Cr + 3.3x%Mo + 16x%N) is usually more than 33, far exceeding 316L (about 24) and even 317L (about 29).

The extremely low carbon content (<0.02%) effectively avoids the precipitation of chromium carbides between grains during welding and high-temperature service, ensuring the corrosion resistance of the welding area and heat-affected zone. The appropriate nitrogen content (0.1-0.2%) not only stabilizes the austenite structure, but also further improves the strength and corrosion resistance (especially pitting/crevice corrosion resistance), and delays the formation of harmful intermetallic phases.

High nickel content (~24%) ensures the stability of the austenitic structure under harsh conditions and provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in chloride ion environments. The addition of copper (~1.5%) significantly enhances the corrosion resistance of the material in reducing acids such as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, broadening its application range.

Compared with ordinary austenitic stainless steel (such as 304L, 316L), S904L has higher yield strength and tensile strength, while maintaining good plasticity and toughness, meeting the mechanical requirements of pressure-bearing equipment and structural parts.

It retains the good hot and cold forming ability and weldability of austenitic stainless steel. Conventional stainless steel welding methods (such as TIG, MIG, SMAW, SAW) can be used. Usually, heat treatment is not required after welding, but matching high-alloy welding materials (such as 625 alloy) must be used.
